In the past few months I have doing lots of Caricaturing. I found a great site with tons of images, great for Caricaturing. The link to it is here. This is something that Lauri and I are very interested in doing during our spare time between freelance jobs. Possible gigs or amusement parks.

I have been facscinated with Caricaturing for along time now, there so many talented Caricature artists out there! I created a Pinterest board specifically for Caricaturing gathering all the major talents for inspiration. You can view it here. Below is some of my earlier work to the more recent. More on this topic to be followed up...stay tuned!

Toons On Tap - Session 31: Paris Romance

The Animated Process of Our Paris Poster!
Created By: Jeremy Cardarelli

Burlesque performers Bianca Boom Boom and El Toro are teaming up for evening of adorable, quirky, and at times, melodramatic, life drawing poses.

What's the the theme, you ask? Bianca Boom Boom will portray an American office woman away in Paris for an important business deal. She meets a charming French man, played by El Toro, and the two begin a whirlwind romance.

This night is going to be sweeter than a bag of candy. If you are in the mood to draw super villains or barbarian babes... you will have to wait until July. :)

Toons On Tap - Session 30: Brave!

Actress Adrianna Prosser hits our stage as the heroic heroine Meridia from the Pixar movie Brave. Adrianna is not only an actress, she is trained in stage combat, archery, and horseback riding. Did we mention that she's a natural redhead with a Scottish accent? If you are looking for a real life Merida, look no further.

April's Sketchbook Challenge

30 Day Sketchbook Challenge: Round 2

Here we go again. At the end of March, Lauri and I were checking out some sketchbooks in an art store, when we found an Art Paper sketchbook from Strathmore. Our faces lit up and we both said to each other, "Sketchbook Challenge!!".  We set out some simple rules and regulations for each other.

The Rules:
  • no copying work from other artists
  • no minimum number of drawings on pages
  • no being lazy; the point is to improve
  • minimum of 10 pages of superheroes
  • minimum of 10 pieces of marker
  • minimum 10 pages of creatures
  • minimum 5 pages of nude studies
  • minimum 1 page of exaggerated perspective angle - birds or worm eye view
  • minimum 3 pages of different body types
  • minimum 3 pages of different ethnicities
  • drawings on BOTH sides -UNLESS there is paint/marker bleed through
Simple enough. I thought to myself this is going to be another breeze in the park. As April first came around, I opened it up to the first page and completely froze. 7 days in with the challenge and I hadn't even put the pencil to the paper, as Lauri breezed on by. Finally getting over this fear, I put my pen to the paper and started off with some caricatures.

Caricatures from the blog Mugshot of the Day.

I then moved on to doing some gesture studies using Stephen Silver's Posebook app and some foreshortening exercises.

Moving forward and doing some shape and vintage fashion studies.

Finally, ending with some creature work, along with some horror poster compositional studies. While doing the horror poster studies, I noticed that on mostly all horror posters the composition was symmetrical to create that very unsettling feeling.

The end result was that at the end of the month, I still had 20 pages left to fill.  Lauri, on the other hand, was at the end filling in the gaps of her sketchbook and missing some of the regulations. We both failed this challenge. :( Will there be a round 3?.....Of course there will!! While we failed, it was just another great kick in the head saying, "YOU GOTTA DRAW MORE!"

Check out Lauri's challenge results over at The Houndstooth Sketchbook.

Toons on Tap: Life On Mars & Red Herring's Babes In Space Posters

Mid April, Lauri and I had the challenge of creating two sci-fi poster for two different events. The first one was for our Toons On Tap: Life On Mars.

Concept sketch for Life On Mars.
Lauri's final painted piece.
Lauri then took my sketch and painted it gorgeously in Photoshop.

The second of the poster was for Red Herring's Babes In Space! Red asked us early last month to come up with a background design that she could use for her upcoming event. I created the concept sketch again and Lauri painted it to perfection.

Toons On Tap April - Marvel Month!

Toons on Tap Sessions: 26 and 27 - X-Men and Venom
The Making of the Posters

Lauri has been inspiring me to do some blogging about my process on the making of our posters.  I will try my best, as I am not the best writer.  The content on the process will be minimal with more focus on the images.

The process below will be the X-Men poster I completed for session 26. Check out Lauri's Blog for her process on making the Venom poster.

My first step to creating posters is to generally rough out some thumbnails.  I then move on to the characters and play around a bit with their shapes and features.  I started out with Scarlett Witch. Playing around with her design at first.  I then had this idea to go somewhat fashion-y with this poster.

Roughing it out

To begin, I researched the models that would be portraying the characters.  Starting off with Toronto Rogue, I started a rough sketch off one of her photos.  With the rough sketch, I lightly traced it with a red col-erase pencil, and then started to apply watercolour.

For Tamar Lipsey's Scarlett Witch character, I wasn't happy with the sketch I drew.  So, I redrew her character, and also painted it right into Photoshop.  Below is the rough draft for the composition of the two of them.

From here I refined them both and got Lauri to design the text around them. God bless her interests in typography- it has really helps us out a lot.  Below is the final piece.

Final poster

We then took both of our posters to make a double feature Grind-house style of our Marvel month teaser poster.

Double feature!

...and now onto our next posters!

Toons On Tap - Session 25: Cleopatra

Artwork By: Lauri Lewis
Check out the process of this poster over at The Houndstooth Sketchbook!
We are excited to announce our next model is international burlesque performer (and instructor!) Coco Framboise. Arguably the biggest performer based in Toronto, Coco has dazzled audiences in Amsterdam, Italy, New Orleans, and Long Beach. Don't miss this opportunity to draw her in person!

Coco Framboise will be costumed as the spectacular siren Cleopatra. We've heard requests for costumes with drapery, and believe us, this costume in flowing with draped, white fabric.

Can't wait? See a video of her performing in New Orleans here:

Toons On Tap - Session 24: Beetlejuice

Poster designed by my partner Lauri Lewis. Check out her blog to see the process behind the text.

Toons On Tap brings you TWO models for the price of one when we bring back one of our favourite pairs, Patricia and Dave!

Last time Patricia and Dave posed for us, they packed the house with a Freddy Krueger theme. Now, they're back as the ghost with the most, Beetlejuice, and his gloomy best friend, Lydia Deetz.

*UPDATE* -  Local animation veteran Charlie Bonifacio will be our special guest artist for the night! Charlie has offered to share insights on his drawing process and give suggestions to artists in the audience who are interested.
